EP REVIEW: Weezer - SZNZ: Winter

Weezer has had a busier year than usual - hell, they've been more active than usual. Since the release of OK Human in 2021, the group has been putting out material pretty consistently, including the hard rock Van Weezer that I have yet to listen to (truth is I'm afraid of it). On top of that, they have had the SZNZ series of EPs, with each one serving as an ode to the seasons of the year, with slight influence from Vivaldi. They're concluding their series with Winter, and frankly I think it's best for last. No gimmicks or sonic revivals on this one - just pure power pop alt-rock goodness, and a proper return to form for Weezer. It's undeniably nerdy ("Basketball," "Iambic Pentameter"), baked in loneliness ("I Want a Dog," "The One That Got Away"), and supremely catchy throughout the entire album. When the EP culminates in "The Deep and Dreamless Sleep," the SZNZ series feels pretty worth it all for that. Easily the strongest and most consistent one of the bunch, and if Weezer made any albums that sounded like this, well I wouldn't mind one bit.
