I always love a good dose of the ol' indie rock that comes out, even if it's 9 hours long, but it's especially fun if I have no idea what I'm getting into. That's the best thing about reviewing as much as I do - that unbridled sense of discovery. When I had Rat Saw God brought to my attention with absolutely no knowledge of this Wednesday group beforehand, I was met with that experience yet again - throughout Rat Saw God, we're met with a pretty solid run of songs, proudly noisy and rough throughout and with a surprising influence from country music on a few moments - you wouldn't expect it, but this twang tinge actually elevates more than a few moments on this album past that surface-level indie rock, most obvious on some of the best moments like "Chosen to Deserve", even if other moments like the epic "Bull Believer" are still amongst the best on the album without as much of this influence. While it's not the most standout indie rock of the year, it's a more than respectable release that's elevated at many moments with its country flavors that keeps it falling behind some other more generic releases - I only wonder if they'll continue in this very unique direction on a future release.
🆗
