ALBUM REVIEW: David Ackles - American Gothic

Don't get me wrong, I love me some vaudeville music leanings in my pop - I'm a Harry Nilsson and Paul McCartney guy, so that much should be evident. On paper, an album painting various scenes of America through varying musical styles and tones could be a fun time, but ultimately Ackles' third album is too trite and repetitive to really get off the ground. Ackles has a solid knack for singing, the compositions are certainly filled with life, and even some moments like the sweetness of "Love's Enough" or the consumerist vision of "Oh, California!" get their point across decently well. A few good songs isn't quite enough to save what is ultimately a pretty dull album, even if the results aren't offensive in the slightest - this is 'premo background music.

🆗
