Art Garfunkel, if you can believe it or not, put out more records in the 1970s than Paul Simon. This may not seem believable at first, but Paul only put out three studio albums, meanwhile we're on Garfunkel's fourth at this point in the story - the difference probably lies in the fact that Simon's work is much denser and filled with variety than Garfunkel's. Fate for Breakfast came at the tail-end of the 70s, and is pretty much more of the soft-rock that was on Breakaway, but with parts feeling somewhat forward-thinking for the decade that was to come - that's to say that some moments sound like Chicago 16. Now while some moments invariably sound too cheesy for their own good, Art is still Art, and you can count on him for a good performance at the very least. Moments like "Sail on a Rainbow" or "Finally Found a Reason to Live" showcase what are probably some of Art's best solo moments, and album opener "In a Little While (I'll Be on My Way)" sounds great, even if you could very easily imagine Peter Cetera singing on it. Some moments lively, others somber, and most of it just fine, perhaps Fate for Breakfast is the platonic ideal of an Art Garfunkel solo album, even if it isn't his best.
