Much like the actual season of Autumn, Weezer's SZNZ: Autumn EP is my favorite out of their series yet. It's the ideal follow-up to what was already an improvement with the Summer EP, but this time with some emphasis on electronic dance beats behind the alt-rock instrumentation. A lot of this album has some electronic leanings, which certainly makes for the most interesting sound from this series yet - "Francesca" is one of the best songs from the series yet, and its backed by synths and a heavy electric beat. Post-punk has at least a bit of a sonic influence on this album, and I largely think that it works in the album's favor. While Weezer's songwriting is always pretty hit or miss, and we certainly do miss with the painfully on-the-nose "Tastes Like Pain," generally things are pretty catchy and enjoyable here. "Should She Stay or Should She Go" is a great tune, playing like a conversation between Adam and God. "Get Off on the Pain" is pretty by-the-numbers modern Weezer, but it's still a pretty fun song. The opening track "Can't Dance, Don't Ask Me" is a fun, upbeat opener, and easily the best start to one of these EPs. "Run, Raven, Run" and its multipart suite style is deeply entertaining, and probably the single most impressive song to come out of the series so far. In more than one way, I'm excited for winter now.
